Day 5b

He pushed aside some papers and saw a library book underneath. Pictures of the Confederacy. A page was marked. He opened the page, and a smile slowly spread across his face. He saw familiar faces, the 18th Mississippi Cavalry, when he first joined the Confederacy. The men knew his abilities, calling him Night Wolf, and swore themselves to secrecy. The surgeons said that his wrapped dead body was for them to observe how and where to cut. And at sunset, one of the surgeons would take him out of the tents, unwrap him, and he would feed.
“Maybe I should bring this book back.” He turned it over, and stamped on the inside back cover was the date due, Jun 17 1962.
A little bit of an overdue fine, but he’d have to see whether or not they’d come after the borrower. Tucking the large book under his arm, he climbed back up the stairs.
Now that he knew where the Providence Library was, he headed in that direction. Since Terry’s safe house was close to it, he could disappear there.
Back at the library, he found the book drop and put it in the steel box. He looked up at the library’s windows. There were no cameras in front, but as he approached the glass doors, he could see cameras on the inside.
Painted on the doorway, he could see a slightly darker shade of green on green, an ankh. This was an Elysium, a safe place to gather. But how to get in? The doors were locked. He went to the back of the library, looking closely at the doorways and thresholds.
Then he saw the same ankh on the threshold. He reached up and pushed, but nothing happened. He tried the door, first using human strength, then vampiric strength. The latch clicked open.
